Organic brown flax seed, also known as linseed, comes from the flax plant, which is cultivated for its seeds as well as its fiber. The seeds, which are a little larger than sesame seeds, contain omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber and lignans. 

Organic flax seed is an excellent source of fiber. Flax is also the most widely available botanical source of omega-3 fatty acids. While whole flaxseeds are full of nutrients, they are very hard for the body to break down: ground flaxseed is much more readily absorbed. Fortunately, making ground flax is easy: just use your home mill, a spice grinder or a high-speed blender.
