• Hexafluoroisopropanol

Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) is a reagent for acylation that is used to introduce fluorine atoms into a compound and improve a compound's volatility and detectability. Fluorine atoms on a GC analyte are widely utilized to increase the sensitivity of thermal conductivity detectors (TCD) due to their sensitivity towards halogens. Due to its high volatility and electronegative nature, Hexafluoroisopropanol has also found use in sample preparation for GCMS and other forms of gas chromatography. This acylation reagent is often used to acylate carboxylic acids that prove troublesome, due to their lack of volatility and their capacity for hydrogen bonding. HFIP is also a useful solvent for many reactions, and for dissolving peptides and peptide reaction intermediates at increased concentrations.
